Filmmaker Rashad Frett’s remarkable journey from Hartford, Connecticut, to the Sundance Film Festival is a testament to creative determination, perseverance, and the lasting impact of mentorship.

Frett, a graduate of Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), where he studied filmmaking under professor Jeffrey B. Teitler, founder of Envision Films, received the 2025 Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. Dramatic Directing Award for his debut feature film, Ricky. The film explores the challenges of reentering society after incarceration, drawing upon themes of identity, belonging, and the struggle to find a path forward.

For Frett, whose filmmaking roots began in Hartford, the recognition represents an extraordinary milestone in a career built through years of dedication to storytelling.

A recent feature in The Connecticut Mirror explores Frett’s remarkable path and the mentorship of filmmaker and CCSU professor Jeffrey B. Teitler, who continued working with Frett well beyond his graduation and through his acceptance into New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Their relationship reflects a dimension of arts education that extends beyond the classroom. Mentorship can provide emerging filmmakers not only with technical guidance and creative encouragement, but also with  tactics to navigate within this very challenging industry.

Frett’s success is particularly meaningful for Connecticut’s filmmaking community, demonstrating how local talent and educational opportunity can contribute to achievements on the national stage.

His journey also serves as a reminder that the influence of a teacher does not necessarily end at graduation. Sometimes, the most meaningful contributions unfold years later, as former students develop their own voices and bring their stories to audiences around the world.
